Marine radio--Handheld VS Built-in

Marine radio--Handheld VS Built-in

With the development of technology, communication has become more and more convenient, but new technology hasn’t replaced the marine radio. If your boat is boat is broken down, sinking, capsized or there is a medical emergency, you will need a radio to call for help. If you are going more than five miles offshore, we highly recommend having either VHF, a 27 MHz, or HF radio. While you are at sea, you must have your radio turned on and tuned to the distress frequency. For VHF, the frequency is channel 16. For 27 MHz, the frequency is 27.88MHz. A marine Very High Frequency (VHF) radio allows you to converse with other boaters and contact those in the area during emergency situations.

HandHeld Vs Built-in Radio

The first decision to make when buying a radio is whether you are going for a handheld or installed version. A handheld radio is ideal for use on small boats that lack the dash space to install a radio and boats without an electrical system. The handheld is also ideal for communication from a tender to the mother ship. A Built-in marine radio is ideal if you have the space for it and want a secure, fixed location to operate from. Marine radios also tend to offer more features and connections to antennas for greater range.
